After these, there was again an innovation to add a letter code at the end of the plate that signified the issue year. This had two advantages: It helped people make out the age of a vehicle and it also meant that the number sequence was meant to recognise individual vehicles as it needed to be reused each year for changing year letter.  Because of this presentation of the year code at the end, such number plates are known as suffix number plate i.e. EXE 488L. And after this, there came up prefix number plate i.e. L488 EXE followed by unique ID number and region code.

With the increasing numbers of vehicles, the prefix systems replaced by another number plate that consists of a two letter regional identifier known as ‘local memory tag’, a two digit ‘age identifier’ or a year code. And then, three letter random element that gives definite identification for each vehicle. For instance FY51 SMR, in which ‘FY’ is Lincoln’s code and 51 is September 2001.
