If we say about Honda, many will relate it to the VTEC but how many know what is exactly the VTEC. So, this entry be written to give you an overview about the VTEC. If you own a Honda with VTEC engine, you must know it before someone ask you.
VTEC stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. It is a valvetrain system developed by Honda to improve the volumetric efficiency of a four-stroke engine.
In the VTEC engine, there are two cam lobes actuating for each valve instead of one like many common cars. One cam lobe is optimized for low-RPM stability and another one is optimized for high-RPM power output. Each cam lobe will give different lift to the valve whether low or high. When operating at the low RPM, the ECU will give the signal to the valvetrain to operate with the low lift cam lobe. So, the usage of the fuel can be reduced and while operating at the high RPM, the high lift cam lobe will be activated. So, the power of the engine can be increased.
